It’s a Christmas Spectacular and so much more…
SPECIAL 3-DAY RUN: ALWAYS SHINE
Winner of Best Actress (Mackenzie Davis) at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival!
Having drifted apart recently, Anna (Mackenzie Davis) and Beth (Caitlin Fitzgerald) take a weekend trip to Big Sur, but their mutual jealousy – Anna is more commercially successful, and Beth is a more gifted actress – begins to tear them apart. Sophia Takal pulls liberally from filmmakers ranging from David Lynch and Roman Polanski to Ingmar Bergman, transforming a tale of a disintegrating friendship into a horror film that intensifies their professional antipathy. Going into production at the same time as Alex Ross Perry’s similarly premised Queen of Earth, ALWAYS SHINE provides a more visceral and abrasive counterpart that deserves recognition as one of the year’s best films.
KINO LORBER PRESENTS: WITHIN OUR GATES WITH A LIVE SCORE BY WILLIAM HOOKER
Kino Lorber’s Pioneers of African-American Cinema box set is undoubtedly the year’s most significant home video release, acting as a corrective to decades of erasure of minorities’ contributions toward cinema, a treasure trove of rarely-seen silent cinema, and a timely opportunity for all of us to broaden our horizons. In celebration of the release, we are working with Kino Lorber and esteemed jazz musician William Hooker, who has performed at jazz festivals around the world and local venues, including BAM and The Atrium at Lincoln Center, to bring you a very special night of music and movies. Mr. Hooker and his band will provide live accompaniment to Oscar Micheaux’s WITHIN OUR GATES, one of the highlights of Kino’s box set.

LIVE SCORES BY LOVELESS RECORDS AND THE TENTH INTERVENTION
On December 1, our live score collaboration with Loveless Records continues with I AM CURIOUS (YELLOW), a landmark Swedish leftist film pulling from the French New Wave as it busted taboos about sex and nudity while simultaneously advocating emerging civil rights causes (Martin Luther King, Jr. makes an appearance).
Additionally, Tenth Intervention will join us once again for a holiday screening, this time scoring a series of Christmas and holiday-themed short films on December 19.
Loveless Records will also join us once more on December 29, helping to end the new year in style (titles TBA).
BOOGIE NIGHTS NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY!!!
That’s right, a disco soundtrack, roller skates, and, of course, pornography! Just like in the movie, we’ll be throwing the biggest and best New Year’s Party around (errr, minus the murder-suicide at the end). All Bohemian babes, Haute hippies, and disco lovers are welcome, so we’ll see you in your mini-skirts, bell bottoms, spandex shorts, wrap dresses, and kitten heels as we usher at the beginning of a new era. Stay tuned for more details!
IN BRUGES WITH BOOZE FROM BRUGES
Remember that brewery in Bruges that ran a beer pipeline underneath the city for quicker distribution (and a really cool story)? Its construction hasn’t made it across the Atlantic yet (though we’ve been told Videology would be their first stop,) but the beer has! Your ticket will include a bottle of Straffe Hendrik Tripel Beer for you to savor while appreciating the fact that you don’t have to be In Fucking Bruges to enjoy their beer.
FIRST FRIGHTDAYS: RARE EXPORTS
Our First Fridays series showcasing the best in classic and contemporary horror continues with RARE EXPORTS, a Christmas-themed fantastical Finnish horror film. “An original, daring, carefully crafted film that never for one instant winks at us that it’s a parody,” Roger Ebert said, and he knew his movies. “In its tone, acting, location work, music, and inexorably mounting suspense, this is an exemplary horror film.” We hope you’ll join us.
MUBI PRESENTS: STREETS OF FIRE
Our partnership with MUBI continues with Walter Hill’s mind-blowing, genre-mixing, retro “Rock & Roll fable” STREETS OF FIRE. Touching on everything from musicals to neo-noir, this one-of-a-kind film has influenced everything from Robocop to Se7en.
