THE MAY CALENDAR!

TWIN PEAKS Celebration!

We’re going to let you in on a little secret; that show you like is going to come back in style. We have no idea where it will lead us, but we have a feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange, and we are already feeling more than a twinge of anticipation for the May 21 premiere. To begin, we’re continuing Twin Peaks Bingo each Wednesday through the week of the premiere, and one week ahead of the premiere on May 14, we’ll be hosting Twin Peaks Trivia!

The weekend of the premiere, we’ll be screening David Lynch’s Wild At HeartBlue Velvet (with Pabst Blue Ribbon!), and, of course, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

The premiere on Sunday, May 21, will air live on all our screens starting at 9 pm, but we’re going to make a day of it beginning at noon. We’re pulling a Nadine and reliving the glory days. Rewatch earlier episodes with host Maggie Ross, play trivia, win prizes, have a damn fine cup of coffee, and eat all the cherry pie. More details are TBA, but here’s what our log is telling us:

The day will include the following:

  • Select episodes from Twin Peaks Seasons 1 & 2!
  • Themed drink specials
  • Trivia
  • Costume contest
  • Exclusively “Lynchian” soundtrack
  • Coffee + cherry pie
  • + MORE! (Stay tuned.)

…And, of course, the live premiere of Season 3!

See you in the trees…

Conscientious Projections present ELENA.

“Russia is, without question, our number one geopolitical foe.” When those words were spoken by Republican then-presidential candidate Mitt Romney, he was mocked for being stuck in the Cold War.

Five years later, reports of the new Cold War dominated the headlines, and governing Democrats sounded the alarm bells for proper investigations of President Donald Trump’s alleged ties to the Russian government. Russia, for its part, is allied with Syria’s Assad and with Iran – two of the United States professed adversaries – and is also waging war in Crimea, a territory internationally recognized as part of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin is also stoking the flames of speculation that he is attempting, through cyber warfare and other means, to destabilize the West. Put it all together, and the United States – or at least those to the left of its president – seems to agree that Russia is, without question, our number one geopolitical foe.

the may calendar

Is it all overblown? Is Russia a threat to the United States and the world? What are Putin’s objectives? Is a U.S. president aiming to improve relations with Russia a step toward peace or toward a destabilized West? And what is life actually like in Russia for ordinary citizens? How does their society compare to ours, and what roles or responsibilities do U.S. and Russian citizens have? More immediately, what, if anything, can we expect of President Trump with regard to Russia and vice-versa?

Joining us to discuss these questions is Tony Wood, author of Chechnya: The Case For Independence and editor of New Left Review, and contributor to the London Review of Books. To facilitate discussion, we will be watching Andrei Zvyagintsev Elena. Praised by Jim Hoberman as “the most vivid evocation of Moscow’s contemporary society” and for “[mapping] a world ruled by ingratitude and the absence of justice,” Elena observes the different rituals of Russia’s elite and proletariat classes and the nurse who bridges the two worlds.

Alfreda’s Cinema presents LOSING GROUND (with Nina Collins in person!)

Losing Ground, one of the first fiction films directed by an African-American woman, tells the story of a professor of philosophy and her painter husband, who begin to question their relationship as they each aim to advance their professional careers. Their country retreat is threatened by her research and involvement in a student film and his involvement with a young model.

All but lost for more than 30 years, Losing Ground’s original negative was recently rescued by Nina Collins, daughter of director Kathleen Collins (who passed away in 1988 at the age of 46), at long last making this overlooked masterwork available.

SELENA Sing-Along

It’s the 20th anniversary of the Selena release, and we’re ready to honor the legacy of the late Tejano star and her biopic, starring Jennifer Lopez and jam-packed with musical favorites, with a Selena Sing Along! Can we get a Bidi Bidi Bom Bom? Bring your friends and sing along to the film!

BUFFALO ’66 (with actor Q&A)

On Thursday, May 4, we’re screening Buffalo ’66 with a special introduction by actor Johnny Sansone, followed by a Q&A after the screening! Don’t miss what has been hailed as one of the landmark independent films of the 1990s and one of the great directorial debuts of any era. Buffalo ’66 put Vincent Gallo on the map, and nearly 20 years later, there is still nothing else like it.
