Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Fake Rocks

POSTED BY Wesley Scoggins, 02 April 2008

So you want to smash a boulder over one of your actors head, but you don't want that to be the final scene of their career? The answer is obvious, you need a fake rock.

I love green floral foam for this, because it's very soft and easy to carve and texture. If you want to make a large stone or boulder, start by forming them in the general shape.

Then I started gluing them together, a nice strong glue, like a wood glue would work for this, or hot glue.

After I glued them together, for a little extra strength, I suggest running some wooden dowels through the foam. After you stick them through, just clip off the excess wood sticking out.

After I stuck it all together, I started texturing the surface. You can kind of do this however you want, but I like to get a real rock, then just start hitting the surface to give it a nice randomized surface.

Then I began to wrap newspaper around it.

I then started soaking the news paper in white glue and water, you can also use a polyurethane lacquer, which would probably be a bit sturdier.

After it dries, get a art sponge like this one, and just start stippling all over the piece.

For this I used greys, blacks, and browns, depending on the stone you're trying to replicate you might want to go with lighter or darker colors. I didn't finish the paint job here, because a lot of it is still too wet, so I would hit this with a hair dryer often.

The reason I didn't use a wire frame, is that the package of wire mesh was about 10 dollars, while the foam was 6 dollars, so while the foam seems like it took a bit longer, it was a bit cheaper, the wire might be better for you, so follow the same basic steps, only form the wire in the shape of the rock you want.

Additional pictures will be posted after the paint job gets done, so check back tomorrow!

you know, the sponge itself looks like a real rock actually. well, like one of those super light lava rocks.

I know! That's what I thought too, I thought that was the finished product. Hell, just paint THAT.

The sponge would be GREAT for a smaller stone or something you might throw or knock someone over the head with.
