Roger Avary to Use RED Camera

POSTED BY Blake Robinson, 10 September 2007

While reading AICN (I know, I know) earlier, I stumbled across a tasty bit of information that should be exciting to at least a few of you. Roger Avary, the Hollywood mainstay often associated with Tarantino's earlier works, let slip that he is working on a small side project that will utilize a RED ONE camera.

While the project itself may or may not be interesting, the presence of a RED ONE camera certainly is. For those of you unfamiliar with the ONE, here is a quick synopsis. RED was founded by the creators of Oakley sunglasses. Its first camera, the ONE, is an ultra high definition rig with a 12-megapixel sensor capable of recording at 60fps. This is in stark contrast to the 2.1-megapixel, 30fps standard currently found of most cameras.

The other major kicker here is the fact that the camera is available for $17,500. A ton of money for a regular consumer, but relatively affordable for a film with a basic budget.

You can find videos shot with the RED ONE on its website. I'm rather interested to see what happens when these things break into movie theaters.

Interesting, but some good old fashioned graininess can add character.

I've also written about this camera in my blog: filmlinker.com. It has 4 times the resolution of its competitors. It can the one that makes using film obsolete.

One of the things that struck me when seeing the Peter Jackson short shot on RED was how "clean" the image was. It wasn't typical digital, it was film, it was it's own unique entity. It's going to be interesting to see what Steven Soderberg does with his two pictures shot on RED, I would image the images will look pretty great. One of the great things about RED is that it is a viable option for high-budgeted main stream films as well as Indie films and individuals. As always if anyone is in need of a red camera rental please check us out. The more the RED gets used and people create beautiful images with it, the more the camera and workflow will become standard in the industry.
